March 31, 2012 is the first big race of the year for me and I'm looking forward to the challenges that lay ahead. Cold water and and a big a$$ climb. I started my training schedule on dec 26 to get ready. Of course i have to loose the 10 extra pds that i gained since IMAZ..MYBella can whip up the viddles like no other, but there is always a price to pay when she starts the cooking frenzy. Next week its back to the plan and increased work load.
Special plans this 12 weeks will include Forza, extra hillclimbing on Golden Eagle, more quality run mileage, and weekly brick workouts. There may be some other race venues for training such as the Red Rock series, and more active rest days. So quality work outs are the main goal for IM Calf. and of course try to stay injury free.
2012 BON TEMPS ROULE
I am so looking forward to 2013, as my race plans have been made. It will be a full year for sure with three Ironman 70.3 races, Leadman 125 and IMAZ. I will be making major changes to my training and strategy for races this year as the only way to improve is to dig a little deeper into my body and soul. All 2012 goals were met and it was a fantastic year culminating with a stop at the finish line of IMAZ. I crossed so many personal goals that I lost track and I hope to the same this year. So to say that I am motivated again is a understatement. But the news of the year is that Kiel and myself will be racing together culminating in finishing Ironman Arizona 2013. Bon Temps Roule, my friends as i hope to train with all my ONE mates again this year.

IRONMAN ARIZONA 2011: MY RACE REPORT
Where does ONE start to untangle the thoughts I have concerning completing this mission impossible. So many things have happened in 24 years since 1987, that i wondered my self , can this be done? It has truly been an inspiring week leading up to the race. I have reflected from here to kingdom come but still words cant say what and how I truly feel. Where did I come from, who am I, what will will I become, did you do your best, is your best good enough, are your goals correct, should I change my goals, who comes first family or sport, what will I do if I succeed , what if I fail, will I go back and do it again, is there time, will my body hold up, what challenges lay ahead, am i tough enough, do i have what it takes, just WHO AM I. These are just some the questions that roll through your mind on race day. Being a lifelong athlete I feel pretty sure most everyone has the same introspection about these questions, but did you get the answers? For me I most certainly did, but not in the way that I thought. Funny because I thought i had it all sorted out until the race was over, then came the true answers. This race wasn't just about me, but about all the people around me that wanted me to succeed and were part of my success story. It was for my support team, who believed that anything is possible.
This dream started simple enough with Kiel wanting to become a triathlete. Coming back to a sport after so many years away was a little intimidating but I told him that it would take me five years to it get back to where i could participate in a full Ironman but here I am. Fast forward to where we are, the race is done , I have finished albeit 16 hours but hey Ill take it, as Ironman takes no prisoners, and it didnt this year for me either. Cards get dealt and you play them. Sure I had goals, but like most AGers they take a back seat to the reality of the race. Now, I have future goals and will have new race plans because at the end of the day we passed this test.
Kiel, you were the number one reason why I came back to this sport and my dreams of doing this with you will not stop. I have a limited amount of time but a father and a son ought to do this race together once in there life. We have done so many other exciting things it would just be an honor for both of us to cross that line in the same race. You are the best son a man could hope for.
Carla, my wife, BFF, MyBella, you are the reason why i never fail. You wont let me. You make me challenge myself and always have a kind supportive words when thing seem bleak. You are such a positive reenforcer! Your boys, love your can do attitude on life. You have chased after me for thirty years offering support in every way imaginable. Dinners brought to me between Fairbanks and Nenana, traveling and supporting me racing all around the USA and Canada. So here we are again. Lets get this report under way.
RACE DAY:
Its Sunday and Im up early and ready to go. Odd I am not nervous or amped up. I thought I would be but I have prepaered myself that anything can happen on race day and it ussually does. Today would be no exception. I haven't driven five miles when the DPS lights me up for easing through the light at shea and the B-Line. The officers asks where am i going and I laughed to myself as I was thinking about those ironman cartoon videos, so i reply "officer I am an Ironman and i wasnt paying attention", and he replied Im sure , "you are an idiot". anyway i get down there and it is chaos right off the bat. parking, getting my stuff organized, checking my bike, all of it. When I finally get to the ONE tent life settled down to normal as I was with my mates! Same O same 0. Got suited up, did the meet and greet , paparazzi style photo shoot, then off to the water with Jeff VanDrie. As we are standing in line I here Reilly say get in the water. People are starting to panic and the crowd slowly move to the rail. I was thinking, What! we are not gonna make it down to the ramp at this pace. And we didn't. Everyone climbed the rail and jumped in to the lake. BAM, just like that Im under water. Hello Sunday morning! Jeff and I meet near the far side yellow buoy and wait for the canon. I here Dan sing and then just like that the calm turned into a raging river. All hell broke loose in 5 seconds. We are all pounding each other, Im hearing people hyperventilate and panic! I'm thinking get the heck away from me. So i found my open area and start swimming for my life for awhile. Then some one grabs my legs for a buoy. Great, now I'm swimming for two but luckily they let go and I move on. I got on pace and made the swim in 1:35 which was only 5 minutes slower than I thought. When i got out I had plenty of energy and enjoyed the whole scene. g
Grab my gear and Then into the changing tent. Holy Sh@#! 50 plus guys throwing stuff everywhere. While there I hear my name and look over and see Neal almost ready to roll. i fight my way to a chair and bget all dolled up for the party only to have to make a pit stop. Really??? undress and do it al over again. there went 20 minutes but im still ok and head out to ride. There are thousands of people lining the fence as we roll out like gladiators for battle. exciting!.. by the time Im at Mclintock the leaders are starting to zoom past me going the other way. I was looking for Erik and sure enough he wasn't very far behind when the AGer started zooming past me. The Bline was the same as always head wind on the way up and tail wind down on lap #1. By now Ive seen or heard "GO ONE" at least a dozen times. I stay right on my times and head back to town, 2:15 a lap is the plan and i'm right on it. Then the second issue occurs, port a potty breaks every 15-20 miles, ALL DAY LONG! So my ride is interrupted quite regular for the rest of the day. Still no problem as I'm done in 6:57 with 5-6 breaks.
In the meantime and unbeknown to me my tracker split gets lost in Ironman live and Carla has a panic attack trying to find out if i wrecked or DNF the race. they drive up and down the bline till they find me. Hate that when it happens. Didn't want them all freaked out during the race. It turns out multiple friends and family were probably wondering the same thing. My last lap was the same as the others without a big dropp off so I was thinking all good with my HR right at 120.
As i started the run i told myself to just keep moving no matter what and I would be fine. It was so beautiful out and the crowd were unbelievable. I started easy and my legs felt good, Hmm a good day? NOT! Somewhere around mile 9 the blister ordeal started! Issue # 3 has just arrived to the party! I tried to get medical help but go figure paramedics have no vaseline in the ambulance. Really??? thats like me not having my TAZER. By the time i made it around to special needs it was "too late baby". adjust- adapt- improvise==walking. So from mile 13-14 on I knew that i would not be able to run..so after dealing with the fact that 14 hours was out of the question, i moved into survival mode to finish.
Now I start to play the math gymnastics game to make sure I can finish the race in under 17 hours. Oh boy, math after dark. Suddenly i see this figure of a person hollering my name on the bridge. Damn if it aint John Dean coming to see me on the course. He is feeling bad that he has to leave and wont see me finish. I'm like, dude its ok I'll be fine. After a brief visit with John and Cindy, double parked at the edge of the bridge. i press on. I tell him not to worry that this is a personal battle now about getting to the finish line..I share this part because it shows just how thoughtful, John and Cindy Dean are as people. They truly are a fantastic couple. So on i go to mile 23 when two more shadowy figures pop out. Hey POPS! I know that voice, its my boy! and Adam right next to him. We hash out the issues and they tell me they are going to see me home. Those last three miles were the best of the race. Kiel, calculating the mileage and projected times to finish, laughing and talking fantasy football and the upcoming turkey bowl. So with the last 1/2 mile to do, they leave me and head to the finish line. As I come around the corner, I'm hearing Mike Reilly doing his thing and Im thinking, WOW, I am here! I Made It! 24 years later. I start high fiving everyone in the crowd until i see MyBella! Show -stopper!!! stop and tell her I love her and plant two kisses on her. video by Hannah complete with sound effect...See FB post "the kiss". Reilly calls my name, 1st time for him, Phil Legget got me in Canada., see VHS tape for that. get my photo at the line and just like that it is all over. 16:09...bring on 2012! What a inspirational day for the journey. I t was amazing. I had so so much fun! had a blast!
Special thanks to ALL the ONE Multisport members for there support and kind words. Just like in training races through this summer, Erik was the fastest and I was the slowest, no change there. and no worries either. Everyone has goals to reach and though my time goal didn't occur, i had secondary goals that did get done..finish, have fun and enjoy the Ironman experience.
So did I answer my questions. Yep I sure did. My number one answer is Ironman is fantastic but No one can do this without family, friends and support. Team Keller-We are Ironman! ONE Multisport- We are Ironman! To my ONE mates-You are an Ironman! thank you all and see you in Cali for Oceanside, Vineman and IMAZ 2012 right here in Tempe Arizona.

So its down to ONE!!!
Its November 18th, and I just got done going over my bags. Geez, i must have 50 lbs of gear. The end of this journey is almost near and I can start to feel the excitement build. This am, MyBella and I went to Ironman village to do some shopping for her. Yesterday Kiel and I hung out all day at the events. Tonight MyBella and I will attend Tribe party and then on to the athletes dinner in Tempe. In the true spirit of Ironman, we met Jeff VanDrie"s , freind from Slovakia, Marek and had a great conversation about his country. We got introduced to lots of new people and have had a terrific time.
As you know I have taken tons of photos of our ONE mates. Once this is all over we will be able to share all this for a lifetime. If its your first it's special, If its on your home course its special . If its KONA plans its really special. For me, 24 years later, I'm soaking it all in. I am after the memories of this whole experience. Yeah I'm going to do this again, but the last ONE till now has been a long long journey, 24 years!!. It will be special and an honor to share with all of you.
So who do I thank for this? Well I got a list, just like the shirt from ONE!
Kiel #1 son, my biggest supporter, MyBella #1 BFF and wife, John and Cyndi Dean for making me feel like I belong in ONE Multisport, Jen Spasato, my 3 year spin instructor, Chad Miller for the long rides all over Arizona this summer, Adam Lorenz for running long with me, Joey Gregan for whom I studied while in the pool and offered such great advice on the where and how to do the long rides, Prescott, Ash Folk, Mingus, Jerome, Flagstaff etc. Joel Gerber's spin classes, my ONE riding mates, Neal Gelb, Jon Ford, and Jeff VanDrie, ONE Bartlett lake crew most of whom are doing Ironman, Cindy and Shandra our lady ONE Ironman for all there kind words, Eric Svans for all his meticulous information on race prep and focus, Donna from the PVCC Fitness Center for keep an eye out on my BP and general health, my Fairbanks Police bros Eric Jewkes and my old training partner, Dusty Johnson, all my extended family and everyone who has supported and believed in me, THANK YOU all from the bottom of my heart. Im sure I didn't list everyONE but believe me I am reminded of all of you everyday.
It really does take a lot to prepare for a major event such as Ironman and without a support group it would be nearly impossible. Tonight while listening to Mike Reilly the voice of Ironman I was struck by just how many people on this planet have the drive and courage to participate in Ironman. I never would have thought in the 24 years gone by that it would be what it is today. And they just keep racing. From 18 to 74 years old this year all striving to hear Mike call there name. Me too!
Tomorrow I'll jump in the lake for a quick test of water temp, booties and headgear as 60-61degrees will be cool. Drop my bike off along with a couple bags and I'll be done for the day. A early spaghetti dinner by MyBella and before you know it will be 3am. Rise and Shine......................................... Lets get this party started!

Down to 21
As the end of October nears, so does my major training for Ironman. I have ONE last long run to do this week, then it is the TAPER phase of all this work. Long swims, long bike rides across the state all summer long are now just a memory. It time to get ready for some focus and what the hell I was doing since May.
Yesterday, the ride was 114 on the course. Moving time was 6:45, not bad and certainly doable on race day/ that along with 1:40 swim and transition will put me on the run in 8:30. Sadly the winner will already be done and I will be just starting the test of my life. In my thinking that gives me 8:30 minutes to finish the run. Fifteen hours would be great but you know what so would 16:59. what ever gets thrown my way I plan to deal with it and move on. I have fought many battles over my lifetime but this one I think will test my metal for sure. Not in the same way as chasing down the bad guys for 37 years but personally this will definitely be the hardest physical and mental challenge I will face in my short 58 tears on this planet.
Many many people have helped along the way, but none of it is possible without my main lady and best freind...MyBella! My ONE Multisport mates and all my training partners for the this year and my whole life played a part in getting me to this point. and lastly and most important of all is my #1 son, Kiel as it was him who brought me back from an old arthritic POPS to getting race ready and toe it up in 2011 IMAZ.
For all my ONE multisport mates, enjoy your November taper and enjoy every day of the Ironman experience when it comes to town, in three short weeks. Soak it all in and take John Deans word to heart, Go fast and have a blast, Im going to!

Lessons Learned the Hard Way
As unusual I have to learn the lessons by hard knocks. And such was the case last Sunday during the Soma triathlon. Just another 6-7 hour training day so I thought. well I was in for a rude awakening during the second part of the run. I should have been tipped off after the swim that my heart rate was elevated from my normal OWS. But NO i just jumped on my B-sled and went right to 20mph. After a bit I settled in to what I thought would be Ironman bike pace @ 17 mph per hour but no that didn't happen either. Still i thought I would settle in at 115HR but No that didn't happen either. Once i got to the run it was apparent after 6 miles that this was going to be a not so pleasant day. I had went in to Soma thinking, oh no big deal you can do a half Ironman easy any time....WRONG! when u don't rest before, YOU PAY! and it was my time to get rolled. So the last 6 miles I suffered more mentally than physically although I was totally Fatigued, a very dangerous occurrence 28 days out from IMAZ. As I struggled in two very nice ONE teammates were there to get to the last 200 yards. thanks Lisa and ?, for picking me up the last 1/2 mile.
Its interesting that i went in with Ironman goals for the day but when don't respect the distance it really doesn't matter what you do, failure is right around the corner. I am so grateful that I made this huge mistake and learn from trying to be all that...LESSON most definitely learned. so how did this happen after all this great training? Well my training logs answered that. One day off before the race, lack of solid nutrition, and a huge month of training including 3-4 hr long runs and 6 hr long rides every weekend. So I gave myself a minimum of 3 -4 days on the beach with only walking as active recovery. If I need more Ill add another day in there before Saturday. Then evaluate my last long ride of 112 on the course. I am going to reschedule my last long run to the middle of the week to give rest days. then it is TAPER, taper , taper till race day. I freaking hate to use age a excuse but I'm thinking i better put it in the mix for recovery. other than that it has been a great month
Now for the positives: October has been a very awesome training month. Multiple 6 hour rides as well as long runs. Ive been to Bartlett Lake to adapt to the water as it slowly gets cooler. Not sure how much it ill drop this year but that wont be the issue. 2500 plus souls all thrashing about at one time in Tempe Town lake will be the real issue. i will of course be where the largest congregation of thrashers will be so it will most definitely be COMBAT swimming. hmm do they make a water proof tazer?
Lastly I want to thank my ONE Multisport teammates for all the encouragement and banter...there is a lot to this Ironman business and it is very stressful both on yourself and family and friends. it helps to share the goods the bads and the hilarious ( see the cliff bar utube triathlon video on combat swimming).. so it is on ward and upward into the final month of preparation. see yall on the course this weekend.

Zeroing In On IMAZ!
October was marked as the big month for IMAZ. This is where all the true testing of my metal has and will take place. So far so good. I'm definitely a ton stronger both physically and mentally. Most of my long rides have been solo although i have a had a few riding partners. It definitely helps to have a ride partner to help keep your self in check. Thank you all for riding with me. I have stuck to the my belief to, build the base and the race will be accomplished. I have multiple goals and a vision of how the race will unfold, however wisdom tells me that there will be obstacles to overcome not matter how fit a person is. Fear has crept in but not in finishing but of all the other intangibles. Injury, mechanical failure, nutrition, bodily distress all come up as possible issues. seeing ONE triathlete Sue Meno persevere in KONA was truly amazing. That was a hard blow to receive weeks before the race of her life and she stood tall and won. WOW!
Its interesting that on my long weekend rides, a lot of problem solving occurs. I have been able to anticipate potential issues, dissect them and come up with a plan to resolve the problem. I am quite sure that I will have several to deal with on race day but really that is what this race is all about Problem solving 101. Last week it was medical issues, blisters, chafing and such...my special needs bags will probably be a medicine cabinet and a grocery store.. this week it has been what to wear, yeah right seems easy, however this is the desert and I will get cold, hot and maybe wet. Last weekend brought 55 degrees with freezing fingers. I didn't like that however I did go away by midday. The s@#$ a guy can think of is incredible. So where am I at now. Focusing in on the task at hand.
So far this month I have done two 6 hour rides and will do one more plus two races as big days, not really racing but doing the events in a moderate pace. First on the list is the McDowell 12 hour Midnight run this Saturday at starting at 6pm. Its a 15 mile loop in the desert under a full moon. Its exciting and will definitely be a confidence builder. My plan is 20 miler as a run/walk as, time on my feet is the lesson of the day. Sunday am, back on the IMAZ bike course for a 3-4 hour Z2 TT. We will see what my body allows and again I wont be pushing it to the limits. SOMA half Ironman will be the following week and this will be a walk thru for IMAZ. The lesson here is to stay smooth and not get ahead of myself. Get used to being passed and stay within myself based on my HR. this will be a mental test as much as a physical one to really drill it home what i need to do. So a 6.5 hour race ought to take care of this. Patience, Patience Patience!
I think it is signifigant that my swim and cycling may be better than when I was younger. Not faster but way more efficient. The FELT on flat roads is freaking fast. Its been to the doctor now and is all well and ready to go. Maybe a last minute tune up two weeks out and some fresh rubber and it is set. My times on the course have been good. I still haven't gone all out on the course but i did have a 10 mile stretch down the hill at 28.5 mph average on Sunday. wind aided, of course, but still 28 is 28. My swims have been the one event that i felt that I could control so I spent a lot of time in the water this year, 10,000 meter weeks have been the norm. In Oct I have had several one hour plus non stop swims with drill sets that follow. My HR has steadily dropped as a result of these efforts. I am counting on this to give me a good start with out going into HR stress. However we will see with 2500-3000 folks all starting together it should be a real riot. ps reminder bring extra googles just in case.
My last concern is nutrition and in the coming weeks I will seek out the advice from all the ONE members. Several competed in KONA so i will be asking for advice for sure. I have some ideas based on experimenting but i would like to hone in this aspect of the race. SOMA will definitely be a nutrition trial. Im pretty sure that most of the athletes competing IMAZ are all going through similar thoughts as we get closer to that ever elusive date of 11-20-2011. My motto Live to Tri--Tri to Live! Let the good times roll!

Comparrisons of Training 1987-2011
I thought i would go back and see how training was different from 87 to now. After some research I am shocked at the differences in style of training. In the 80's i was primarily a runner and it showed all through my training on every event that i did. although I crossed trained it does'nt hold a candle to how I train now 24 years later. so at 34 i could run like the wind and on any day I could go 20..sadly that is not the case today.well time has a way of catcing up but it has also made me a helluva lot wiser about all this. I have had to listen to my body way more now than ever before and some days u just have to bite the bullet. so here we go...
In 1987 I had been training for varoius endurance events for for 7 years...hmm master program..llike i mentioned i came from running roots. my basic times were: 5:05 mile, 17:40 5K, 37:45 10K, 1:30 half, 3:05 marathon..I usually averaged about 50 miles a week for 4-5 years so my base was solid. hills, speed work, farklet, distance the works. so that being said this is where the real changes have occurred. injuries an age have slowed me down and mentally the hardest part of all this is that i cant run like the wind. it sucks.. 8:30 mile, 27:30 5k, 56-57 10K, 2:20 half, ----marathon Im saving for IMAZ. that is quite a bit of differnce but the body doesnt rejuvinate like it used to...my cross to bear.
riding however is significantly different. In 1987 my weekly rides leading up to IMCA were 2x40 and a sixty as my base. that year I also did several treks. Fairbanks to Mt. McKinley park, now Denali, and on to wonder lake 160 miles in two days with 10,000 feet of climbing on my mountain bike...the in the park was two lane dirt unimproved road at the time. with bears included. i raced regularly with the unfriendly cycling crowd as they were not fond of triathletes...they really need to get over it...Now the bike has been my primary base. 3-4 bike sessions a week with a plan has helped me establish a solid base from which to build off of. I resisted the all out Saturdays rides with my team to build the base. mentally that has toughened me up the most as i have been the last ONE done. Now my rides are 30x2 and 60-95 on weekends My long rides since early July have been the corner stone of where I am at as i traveled all over the state of AZ to vary terrain and altitude. Although i don't have the same speed, 22.9 in ONE hour time trial in 87, I'm only a couple mph from that number, and i feel my base at riding is a ton better as I have ridden several thousands of miles during the last five years. In Alaska you get about 120 days of riding on dry roads. so all in all I feel my riding has really been ONE of my strengths. Now that I have my Garmin I am able to keep all the exact numbers and at the end of all this I will know exactly how many mile in each discipline.
Swimming is another area that I have concentrated on to build the solid base and to keep my HR down. In 87 I went to the pool 3-4 days a week at the lunch hour for 45-60 minutes swims. My OWS were in the Chena river or out at the lakes. cold cold cold. No real swim plan, just get in and start to go. Stroke mechanics were probably horrible with no real glide. but I was was in great condition so i just powered thru the sessions. Now I am doing 10 thous meters each week for the past couple months. with the help of my little book Swim workouts for triathletes I have become a much more efficient swimmer..yea ONE for 2011. yep Im a better swimmer at 58 than at 34...yahoo...a plus.
Triathlon racing: I traveled regularly on the 80's USTS circuit and did several races in June and July of 87. My Olympic times were between 2:20 and 2:40 depending on course, flat tires, wrecks and jelly fish attacks in the ocean. I had a nasty fall on the Oakland bay bridge on the grates at SF tri. I also traveled to Prescott and did a race in the pines..heart explosion at altitude. Local 10k's, time trials and local tri were also done. I was race tested back then for sure. Now I have once again resisted the temptation to race a lot for fear of injury and to get that base locked in. I did do several !/2leading up to IMAz the past few years and this year Mountain Man with SOMA on the schedule as a big day.
So the Journey has been a very interesting study in time for me. I am feeling a lot of the same feeling in 87 about the buildup. Introspection has definitely occurred and i find my self reflecting on day s gone by more and more. The what if have occurred along with self doubt and anxiety..the will and drive are and have been ONE of my main cornerstones and that has not changed. I was a focused athlete then and I am now. It has been like dusting off an old book for a reread. At times i don't see my self on the road as a 58 year age grouper but other times it hits like a tone of bricks. Looking at all the triathletes around me now has also been ONE huge plus. I never had that before. That part is new, score another ONE for 2011. So were down to two months. ONE other regret is that I think about a lot is what if I trained now when I was 34, 163 lb machine...but that is in the past and Im looking ahead. IMAZ here I come, Oceanside and Vineman, I'm coming to your towns also!

Flagstaff training
This week started with another record week of 110 now exceeding 32 days. Swimming in 110 is not so bad, but running in the heat and the humidity really takes its toll. A great week in training was nulified by poor nutrition all week. MyBella will be cracking the whip and we will be eating right. I also made a slight change in my Thursday workouts by adding a pretty intense spin class with my swim session adding another type of brick to this phase.
So it was off to Flagstaff for a couple days of riding and running. I have adapted to the riding at different altitudes but the running is still lacking at 6800ft. i WILL be taking care of that at the Mcdowell Mtn park this month.
Flag turned out to be a good break for MyBella, Stormie and I to just spend some family time and deal with MyBella's loss of her Mom. We loved her and will miss her very much. The week turned out to be very very stressful for our family as we have love ones in need.
We will also be adding a new Sheltie to the house in the next week. well that day has arrived and tonight we will pick up our new Sheltie at the airport. he had to lay over in Houston so he may have some stress when he gets here.
I finished my three week build phase and it was a Beast. Although my mileage wasn't as high it was definitely more intense in all three disciplines.. the added spin class with Joel is going to be a monster and there will be positive results from that. That dude never stops. My swims are 10 thou a week and that will now turn toward the lake and wetsuit training on Fridays. Some work alterations were made so i can use the Fri-Sat-Sun as the bulk of the heavy mileages.. I'm in recovery this week but plan to ride long in the valley this weekend..85-95 miles or 5-6 hours on the Garmin should be good. We are coming down the coming around the back stretch. dang i hope i have this figured out by Nov 20....

Build Phase
A new chapter began this week. coming back from GA gave me the motivation that i needed to push on through. I just needed to see my POPS who at 94 is survivor! He can't walk and he can't hear but that doesn't stop him from living..He is a remarkable man. I got back in the flow right away with solid swims and rides. ONE other change I have made is doing a spin interval classes with JGOTS. My Saturday ONE ride turned out to be quite eventful for me as I was able to increase my HR by 10 and ride with the group until Alma School climb.. I put my HR on 140 for the hill and rode steady up to Dynamite, then went to 53/11 at 32 mph down Dynamite. At the golf course I thought I saw ONE riders and it turned out it was John and Bill. They must have stopped along the way but it told me I wasnt that far behind. 22mph thru Rio and kinda rolled through to FH. climbing Palasades 10-12% grade was slow but after I rolled pretty good all the way back..All in all a great 52.
So Sunday there was a change in plans. Originally I had planned to roll Lake Mary Rd for 4-5 hr but that changed as we were baby sitting my sons new sheltie, THOR..so I ran the Pemberton trail instead for a 2 hour run..87 and 43% humidity just plane sucks. but i got throgh and legs are not toasted. A solid 15 hour week in Build 1-Week 1
Next week I plan to got to Flagstaff for three days of training. two rides and a long run.

Mountain man triathlon
I had a solid race with out extending myself too deep. Swim and ride were both very good. No issues with 7000 feet. but I have been doing altitude for 5 weekends now. My run was a little different and i felt like i was having heavy legs all day. Of course that hill kicked my butt however this was not a A or B race for me and i only took off but one day before. This was the end of base training for me so now I'm moving into build phase. I'M STOKED COMING INTO BUILD PHASE. no injuries!
This started with steamy runs in Georgia swamp land trails..99% humidity each morning..drenched when done. I did three swims over there and i'm now phasing into more speed work each week..I can tell the difference this week of all that happened during base. going for long bike this weekend probably on Sunday. maybe a solid brick day...we will see. on a side note the last few days, the temps were 117-119 depending on whose car temp u looked at and where u were. yesterday i rode 20 and baked before stopping at the slippery pig bike store in FH..doug bailed me out with A/C and more water. I have Sept and October to work on speed on bike and swim..my runs will increase in distance till the 12 hour all night run at McDowell Park, 20 planned. Im not going to worry about speed on the run, injury risk tooo frigging high. well that's my plan..lets get this party rolling!

Mountain man triathlon on Aug 14, 2011...just anther training day..then off to see my Pops in georgia

Prescott
Well the week started off with my first ever 5000 meter swim at LTF. A week with days off follwed by two days at Mingus mountain. Prescott valley-Mingus-Jerome- Prescott Valley was 6.5 hours on the bike with 5000 feet of climbing. We went to 7G. I went with my ONE group on saturday but fell behind quickly but I did drag myself up the mountain again.

Numbers
what a great two weeks over 400 miles riding and 10,000 meters swimming ..both my best so far...ever! Im interested to see how this works by letting the run take a back seat for a while...we will know soon enough...

July 14
this has the makings of a nother good week. have had 8500 meters swim time this week..my bikes have dropped a bit but that will pick up this weekend. temps have been crazy hot and humid and the heat just sucks the life out of you...all the ONE folks are at vineman or mountainman this week....im Prescott or flag bound this weekend.

Tour de France week
July 10. 2011--End of a long week of training. 22 plus hours = 246 miles of work..add the last saturday and sunday rides and I have 346 miles in the bank. wow It is interesting that following the pattern of staying in zone 2 i have been able to add up the miles without injury. today i through in a one hour TT and came in at 20.7 on the IMAZ course. the time off work really helped as i was able to train when the heat was down. HEAT is the big equalizer for sure. Yesterdays climb up 9 mile hill was over 10 mph...hmmm i might be improving again..nutrition and hydration have been spot on...next week i will hit the pool hard and hopefully a brick session of swim and ride. I still have work to do on the run and i will focus on that after the tour.

Tour de France week
saturday today was a good day. I stayed in Zone 2 and except for the steep climbs....went up 9 mile hill at 10.5 and low Zone 3....after 300 plus miles this week I am still feeling stronger each day...

All swims this week till the weekend.. a 2000-3000-4000 yard swim...July has arrived and I'm taking a side adventure of riding the Tour de France on map my ride. Day 1- 50, 9mile hill, day 2- 47, IMAZ course, day 3 48 on TDS course, day 4- 41 McDowell rio, Day 5, Skull Valley 70 with transition run. Skull Valley partner Chad Miller suggested this area to get out of the heat...yep what a great day. Base 3 wiil be on hold for another week while I continue on the bike adventure with some swimming. I got my garmin rolling and all my stats and nutrition look good. At this rate 7 hour rides will be happening a little ahead of schedule but thats ok...health and nutrition are key...STAY IN BASE
Base 2 week 3
All is well and I am getting stronger...the medicine changes are starting to take hold..Issue with BP and Tyroid...im literally a pharmacy now...I did do a 3600 yard swim...followed by my first 4000 yard swim in many many years...My long ride came in at 75 miles and I rode with Chad Miller, who is getting ready for IMCA..It ios nice to have a training partner on the same schedule..many many thanks to Chad
base 2 week 2
so this week brought the first 100 mile weekend in riding...swimming is moving along and running is tasking more of a back seat..Health IS THE TICKET.
Base 2 week 1
ride time moved up to 68 miles around Rio Verde and Carefree...rode with the ONE boys today...they were in HR training, me 2.
recovery week
this was a great week in Sedona with MyBella and Stormie..we had fun hiking and just being in the cooler climes..
base 1 week 2

May 2011- My first Post
Its mid May and I have just begun the training schedule for IMAZ. I am now a member of ONE Multisport triathlon club centered out of Scottsdale Arizona. I have competed three 70.3 events and ready to embark on this adventure. My training will be similar to the the Triathlon Bible by Joe Freil. Being self taught has always been my style but I have learned to ask the young guns a lot of questions since the sport is ever evolving. I have met many new friends this past four months and with this thing called social media i am hooked up. so now me and my buddy Garmin we are ready to roll. thge plan will be 12 weeks of base training, 6 weeks of build and 3 weeks of taper. I have some extra weeks for the Tour de France rides in July, swim week in June, and a run special in September. An of course injury. Nutrition is what i'm studying most let the fun begin
